South Kensington Museum Events in London
Just 6 years after the success of The Great Exhibition in 1851 and based on the suggestion of Price Albert, The South Kensington Museum as the first of a series of educational establishments was opened to the public. The museum was intentionally designed in form a factory with iron used both for the frame of the structure and also the cover. Although the museum events was doing well but the people used to talk of ugliness and sardonically called it “Brompton Boilers” because it looked like two steam boilers next to each other. The museum was opened in June 1857 on Wednesday 24 followed by an exclusive visit by her majesty Queen Victoria the previous night. It is now part of Victoria and Albert museum.
The South Kensington Museum Events
The South Kensington Museum was initially aimed to present decorative arts and Industrial object but a number of scientific collections were also included along with objects such as Educational, Food and Animal machineries and also building materials. Among the contributes Bennet Woodcroft, founder of Patent Office Library, created a divided section dedicated to exhibiting of machineries. The woodcraft section not only contained some contemporary items by also historical objects related to the previous inventions with great contributions to the world such as an old beam engine the work of James Watt which was actually the oldest one survived.
The South Kensington Museums also holds a large collection of ship models. These models were gathered gradually but the museum started collecting them in 1864. Along with the ship models a collection of marine engines are kept in the museum too.
